Where can I learn all about green living like rural off the grid?

I saw a show of some people living off the land with solar energy, bio diesel, farms, earth made walls, vegetable oil and hydrogen cars, ect.

I would like to see a site or a book or a community that would teach me so I can have thorough knowledge and learn all the ins and outs and learn what works and what doesnt ect and break from a lot of spoiled ways and other things that I am not even aware of.

Green living tips for renters?

My 8yr old has gotten caught up in living green which is great but the majority of tips I find for saving elec, water,etc are for homeowners. Are there any websites for those of us who rent and can’t make changes to the home?

By green I mean earth friendly. I want to know how to make a really well design house, maybe a beach house.

Would this be an example of green living?

If I were to move to my cabin that I have in the mountains. ..

This cabin is nice and rather remote. It has no plumbing. It is not wired for electricity. It has a wood burning stove and fireplace for cooking and heat.

I use lanterns for light. Solar power won’t work because of the tall pine trees that block the sun.

I can use a horse to get around instead of a vehicle. Some of my food needs can be taken care of by fishing and hunting.

I usually spend about two weeks there every summer. I’m not real sure if I would want to live like that all the time unless I really had to.

How would this be for green living?

Living in that cabin is almost like going back in time a hundred years or so. How would you like to try that out?
Water comes from a well nearby. The old hand pump type. The outhouse is in back. No bath or shower but there is a lake not far to the west.
A wood burning stove and fireplace is the only option here and the most practical. Consider the remoteness of the cabin.
The outhouse is OK. The water supply is better then most and far better then what you get in the cities. Never use soap in the lake.

Green Living has been an interest of mine for quite some time and I need more information.

I have researched it and just can’t seem to find a site or book that can explain in simple terms the purpose, how to begin, what it is and how to make it a part of life.

I live in a large metropolitan area that to me seems not all “green” friendly. Please only serious replies, life is too short to waste reading junk from people who have nothing better to do with their life than think of stupid things to write.
Wow, such valuable info you have all given me. As I read through I felt I had to give myself a pat on the back, though, because I have already started doing some of the suggestions. It just made good sense to me to do them. Little did I know I was already starting to live Green. Yeah !!!

What website would you recommend to a family getting more involved with green living?

We already do basic things, like recycle, reuse, turn off lights when we don’t need them, keep the heat low, don’t run the water, etc..but it never occurred to me to wash clothes in cold water only. Where can I find more great ideas like that? Thanks!
