Category Archives: Transportation & Travel

This part of the website is about transportation and travel…

My husband’s experimental solar car and tips on greener driving are examples of the transportation part of this section.

Travel includes comments after traveling in California and after living in Mexico. I’m not sure why but a post I did about a blog a guy does as he walks around in New York City with his camera is surprisingly popular.

Living and traveling in motorhomes has its own category, apart from this one, because I wrote so much when we were living in our Rv for almost half a year.

Expat Living in Uruguay: A Report from Montevideo

Simple Green Living

Before my husband and I returned to the US after living in Mexico from 2005 to 2010, we also gave thought to moving to Uruguay. Expat living there had appeal for several reasons, but home won out. Still, I’ve maintained a curiosity about a country that is unusually welcoming to Americans who want to live there. So when our good friend Peter Rice emailed me last week that he and his wife were in Uruguay, I asked him for a blog post. He obliged, and here it is. Peter is about half my age, so he didn’t write about Uruguay … Continue reading →

Is the Expat Life for You? We Gave It Five Years

Simple Green Living
exotic beach for the expat life

My husband and I were expats in Mexico for five years, and we thought we might stay for the rest of our lives. We came back to the US for personal and family reasons that wouldn’t be true for everyone. Here I’ll describe some of the complexities and choices of the expatriate lifestyle and tell a bit about our years as expats. I’ll also list some resources for finding out more about being expats in general and about any particular country that interests you. There was much that we loved about that time and we sometimes chat about going somewhere … Continue reading →

I’m Wandering Around New York City Without Leaving Colorado

Simple Green Living

Recently I’ve been wandering through the streets of New York City, thanks to a remarkable website called I’m Just Walkin’. A fellow named Matt, who previously walked across the U.S., is now walking in New York, and as he says on the site, “By the time I finish walking every block of every street in all five boroughs, I’ll have traveled more than 8000 miles on foot — all within a single city.” The site is in the form of a blog, and with monthly calendars you can see which days he has walked. He generally posts several photos on … Continue reading →

Simple Living Thoughts after Traveling in California

Simple Green Living

How dependent we all are on fossil fuel. It's easy not to think about that much in daily life at home, but we recently took a road trip to visit family and old friends. Aside from our visits with them, we got the flavor of life in our society: some encouraging things in an utterly unsustainable context. From our home in Colorado, we went through parts of Utah, Idaho, Oregon, California, and Nevada. (We drove about 4,000 miles in a month on the road, and we will offset the carbon dioxide we put into the atmosphere at http:/www.liveneutral.com/calculator — I … Continue reading →

At Bonfire Heights, a Diverse Weekend Conference

Simple Green Living

My husband Kelly and I just spent the weekend at a lovely retreat facility in the redwoods, not far south of San Francisco. We were at Bonfire Heights, a fascinating, delightful, disturbing, and utterly worthwhile conference. Speakers and workshops covered a very wide range of topics, and I found it refreshing to get my brain into some new grooves. The first presentation was a celebration of nerds, put on by Dhaya Lakshminarayanan, a woman whose parents came here from India with her when she was a child. She’s a nerd despite being quite stylish, and she was interested when Kelly … Continue reading →

Reflecting on My Years in Mexico

Simple Green Living

My husband Kelly and I lived in Mexico for much of 2005 — 2010, and I blogged about it all at  mexico-with-heart.com. Now we’re back in Colorado, for good so far as I know… at least those little chickens are a good reason to stay close to home. (They continue to thrive.) Anyway, I wrote a post about my years in Mexico on a website called Hubpages. That link takes you to it. In it, I reflect on what it was like living near Lake Chapala in Mexico’s central highlands. I tell the story of how Kelly falling off a roof … Continue reading →

Sierra Leone: Happy Memories, Dreams of a Better Future

Simple Green Living

When I was in college, I spent a summer on a work camp in Moyamba, Sierra Leone. It was through a program called Crossroads Africa. About a dozen American and Canadian college students joined forces with young Africans to start construction on a high school. As we worked together, we shared stories of our lives. I remember how joyous the young Africans were. I loved dancing on the weekends, at large get-togethers with everyone from toddlers to grandparents dancing together. As a result of that experience, I went to graduate school in applied anthropology, hoping to make a difference in … Continue reading →

Greener Driving: Five Tips

Simple Green Living

We all know that there are steep environmental costs to driving, but for most Americans driving is an essential part of the fabric of their daily lives. Most of us need the flexibility of our own wheels to get everything done. But there are many ways that you can reduce the environmental impact of your driving. Here are just five of them. 1. Share your rides with others. Offer your neighbor a ride to the grocery store, go to parties with friends who live near you, offer to pick up some other children from school when you are getting your … Continue reading →

We Built an Experimental Solar Car

Simple Green Living
Solar Vehicle

How cool would it be to build your own solar car? That’s what my husband Kelly Hart thought, over ten years ago. He was following all the solar car news, and he noticed that all the attention seemed to be going into racing vehicles. He thought a slower moving, reliable neighborhood vehicle would be very useful. So he built one, with some help from me, and we called it our Sunmobile. We used it to drive around our small Colorado town. We even took it in the 4th of July parade one year! How did we create this unusual thing? … Continue reading →

Four Things I Learned About Simple Green Living From My Years in Mexico

Simple Green Living

My husband Kelly and I lived in Mexico for about five years, from 2006 to 2010.  We have a number of Mexican friends, and from them and from observing the culture of the town where we lived, I learned a lot about other ways of living. Here are four of the main things I picked up. 1. Family matters, a lot. You can generally depend on your family. It may be as dysfunctional as any US family, but it defines who you are, what is expected of you, and who you can turn to. After seeing this in action among my Mexican friends, … Continue reading →

The Solar Car Kelly Built

Simple Green Living

Several years ago, Kelly built a solar car and we used it quite a lot. When we left Colorado, we included the car in the deal when we sold our house to friends. It needed some repairs, and I’m not sure if it’s back on the road or not. It didn’t need license plates or any paperwork. You can see details about it and photos on the small website Kelly has: www.sunvee.com By a solar car, I mean one that runs completely on solar power, with no electricity from the grid.
